HC Deb 25 March 1959 vol 602 c141W
Colonel Beamish

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what extent the Governor of Gibraltar has restricted the employment of Britons other than Gibraltarians on the Rock.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

No "ban Britons" order has been made as was alleged in a recent article in theDaily Express. Owing to the shortage of housing no person from the outside is permitted to live and work in Gibraltar if the job can be filled by a Gibraltarian. To that extent a British subject from the United Kingdom does not have an absolute right to take up employment on the Rock. There is no truth in the suggestion that employers have had to take on Italians, Portuguese, French or Germans. I am glad to see that the local Press has taken up this and other misrepresentations with vigour.
