HC Deb 25 March 1959 vol 602 c139W
102. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Supply if he is aware of the growing redundancy in the aircraft industry; and, in view of the rapid progress in the size of aircraft for the carriage of troops and freight, if he will anticipate future requirements by placing more orders now for Britannias and Britannics to meet the future needs, and so prevent this redundancy increasing and retain the skill of the craftsmen in this industry.

Mr. W. J. Taylor

My right hon. Friend gave the House in the debate on 22nd May, 1958, his broad assessment of the future level of employment in the aircraft industry, taking account of the reduction in the demand for military aircraft. As the House is aware, he can place orders for aircraft only to meet the stated requirements of the Services; and he does not place orders on behalf of civil operators.
