§ Mr. Malcolm MacPhersonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what opportunities exist in Kenya. Uganda and 141W Tanganyika, respectively, for Africans to qualify as surveyors.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydCourses leading to the first examination of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors are provided for students from all three territories at the Royal Technical College in Kenya and it is hoped that the Institution will recognise the College for the purpose of courses leading to the intermediate examination. I would also invite the hon. Member's attention to the recommendations of the Working Party on Higher Education which visited East Africa last year on the development of professional surveying courses at the College. Scholarships are awarded by the Governments of Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika to enable Africans to study for professional qualifications overseas. Africans may also gain experience in these Governments' Survey Departments, and in Uganda and Kenya there are arrangements for pupils to be enrolled by liecnsed surveyors for training on the job. In Uganda, Africans may qualify for a sub-professional surveyor's licence after five years experience in the Survey Department and in Kenya and Uganda this Licence may be obtained by passing a local examination.
