Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many education authorities under Section 109 (b) (i) of the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1947, appoint teachers to area sub-committees; and how many teachers were so appointed at the most convenient recent date.

Mr. Maclay

The figures are 31 authorities and 467 teachers at 1st March, 1959. The remaining four authorities are small and are not required by their administrative schemes to appoint area subcommittees.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many education authorities make a regular prac- tice of consulting teachers or sections of teachers in their employment; and how many of them operate joint consultative committees with teachers in their employment.

Thirty-one education authorities consult teachers in their employment: 28 operate joint consultative committees.
