HC Deb 19 March 1959 vol 602 c64W
Mr. Moss

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether Civil Defence Manual No. 1, Nuclear Weapons, 1956 is still available; and to what extent he intends to revise it.

Mr. R. A. Butler

This publication (Pamphlet No. 1 in Volume I of the Manual of Civil Defence) has recently gone out of print, after some 125,000 copies had been distributed. A revised edition is in hand and will be published within the next few months. The first edition described the effects of the detonation of a nominal atomic bomb and of a 10-megaton weapon or hydrogen bomb. The revised edition will be more comprehensive in that it will deal also with nuclear weapons of intermediate power and will include new information which has become available since the publication of the first edition. The booklet entitled "The Hydrogen Bomb" which was published in 1957 to provide information for the public in summary terms about the effects of nuclear weapons and some of the precautions that could be taken to mitigate them is still in print.
