HC Deb 17 March 1959 vol 602 c10W
Mr. Patrick Maitland

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when the reconstruction of Fiddlers' Bridge, Braid-wood, Lanarkshire, is to be completed; and for how many men this work is expected to provide employment meantime.

Mr. Maclay

I expect that work on this bridge, which has just started, may be completed by the autumn of 1960. The average number of men likely to be employed is about 16, but between 20 and 30 may be employed at certain periods.

Mr. Patrick Maitland

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when the provision of a safety footpath for Cartland Bridge, Lanark, is to be put in hand.

Mr. Maclay

I hope that it will be possible to start work in the summer.

Mr. Patrick Maitland

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether, in view of the high rate of unemployment locally and the safety hazards that the Railway Bridge, Braidwood, Lanarkshire, presents to motor traffic, he will now consider its urgent reconstruction.

Mr. Maclay

I regret that I cannot usefully add to the reply that I gave my hon. Friend on 20th November last.
