HC Deb 17 March 1959 vol 602 c26W
Sir A. Bossom

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, in view of the high cost of importing wood, and the strain on national resources, if he will give a general direction to the British Transport Commission to use all metal railway carriages and freight cars.

Mr. Watkinson

No. This is a matter of management for the British Transport Commission. Only a small proportion of timber imports is used for railway rolling stock. For many years all new passenger coaches have been built of steel, with wood used for interior fittings or panelling only. No wooden freight wagons are being built except where necessary for special purposes.
