HC Deb 11 March 1959 vol 601 c112W
55. Mrs. Butler

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what provision he has made for local authorities in the Greater London area to be represented on the committee he has set up to consider the problems involved when the first nuclear-powered ship comes to the Port of London in 1960.

Mr. John Hay

It is at present premature to assume that any nuclear-powered ship will come to the Port of London in 1960. The terms of reference to the Committee which my right hon. Friend has appointed are to advise him generally on the safety problems arising from nuclear propulsion in merchant ships, at sea and in port. We have in mind the need which will arise in due course for consultations with local authorities in relation to particular ports which may be used by these ships.
