HC Deb 04 March 1959 vol 601 cc54-5W
86. Mr. Zilliacus

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department over what area the 50 hydrogen bombs, assumed to have fallen on this country in the Midlands defence exercise of 11th May last, were supposed to have been dropped; what were the points where each of the 18 bombs between five and 10 megatons and each of the 13 bombs of over 10 megatons was supposed to have landed; and what was the area covered by the Civil Defence exercise.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The purpose of the exercise was to test the Civil Defence and air raid warning organisations in the North of England and the Midlands, but the area in which bombs were assumed to have been dropped comprised the whole of Great Britain and it would not be in the public interest to give further details.
