§ Mr. Wingfield Digbyasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty (1) how many modernised warships of each type have been brought into service during the last year;
(2) how many new warships of each type have been brought into service during the last year; and how many have been scrapped or placed on unmaintained reserve.
§ Mr. C. I. Orr-EwingDuring the financial year 1958–59, one cruiser, three frigates and three submarines of new construction will have commissioned, together with one carrier, two destroyers, and four submarines, which have been modernised. During the same period approval has been given to scrap two cruisers, eleven frigates and six submarines. I am afraid I cannot disclose the operational readiness of particular ships in reserve.
