HC Deb 03 March 1959 vol 601 cc27-8W
64. Mr. C. Hughes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state the number and nature of the replies he has received to the letter sent by him to over 60,000 managing directors in this country asking them to set up or expand industries in areas of high and persistent unemployment.

Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state the number and nature of the replies he has received, to the latest date, to the letter which, in February, 1959, he sent to 50.000 managing directors, drawing attention to the assistance the Government are prepared to give to firms setting up factories in Aberdeen and the Highlands.

Mr. J. Rodgers

The letter was intended to draw attention to the facilities available in certain places, and did not seek a reply, but so far approximately 820 replies have been received either by the Board of Trade or by the Development Areas Treasury Advisory Committee. Of these, 288 have been identified as being potential applicants for loans or grants.
