Mr. G. Roberts

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the amount of grant to the Arts Council for expenditure in England, Wales, and Scotland, respectively, during the last financial year; and what are the comparable estimates for the current year, and for 1959–60.

Mr. Simon

The grant to the Arts Council for these three years has been, or will be, as follows: 1957–58, £985,000 1958–59, £1,100,000; 1959–60, £1,218,000. The distribution of the grant is a matter for the Arts Council. For the actual distribution between England, Scotland and Wales in 1957–58 I would refer the hon. Member to the Arts Council's Thirteenth Annual Report.
