HC Deb 02 March 1959 vol 601 cc9-10W
70. Mr. Watkins

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance the average increase in the amount of weekly National Assistance grants to provide for increases in rent paid out to recipients of all kinds in Wales since the Rent Act came into operation; and to how many it has been paid.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The National Assistance Board informs me that on the basis of the data available in respect of Wales it is calculated that some 32,000 weekly Assistance grants have been increased to provide for rent increases during 1957 and 1958. Of these slightly over half have been in respect of increases under the Rent Act. The average amount of these increases is calculated as 4s. 3d. per week. The total is cumulative and I have no information as to how many of the grants are still in payment.
