HC Deb 02 March 1959 vol 601 c6W
54. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that Iceland has declared its willingness to participate in an international conference on the same level as the recent Law of the Sea Conference at Geneva; and, in view of the urgent need for an early settlement in the dispute of the 12-mile territorial limit, if he will take the initiative in convening such a conference.

Mr. Profumo

A second Conference on the Law of the Sea, to be held at Geneva in March or April, 1960, was decided upon by the last United Nations General Assembly. Her Majesty's Government agree that it is urgently necessary to settle disputes in this field and indeed would have liked the conference to be held this summer. Her Majesty's Government are glad to note that, although Iceland did not vote for the conference, she is reported to intend participating in it.
