Mr. Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that Purchase Tax is disliked by manufacturers and retailers due to its hindrance of trade, and that it is unfair, as those in the lower income groups pay as much as those in the Surtax class; and what increase in Income Tax would be necessary on incomes above £3,000 per annum gross, to ensure the same return to the Treasury as that now received by Purchase Tax.
Mr. AmoryMost taxes are disliked by those who have to pay them, but I cannot agree that the Purchase Tax is a hindrance to trade or that it is unfair.
