Colonel Beamishasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he is aware that the East Sussex County Council is anxious to start work immediately in order to improve safety at Chailey crossroads, where many serious road accidents have occurred; what is the waiting period he has stipulated in this case before work can begin; and if he will waive this so that work can start forthwith.
§ Mr. WatkinsonI have not stipulated any waiting period. I made a grant towards the cost of the work in November, 1957. Since then the county council found it necessary to make a compulsory purchase order in respect of the land required. At the beginning of last month an application to confirm the order was made to my Department. It has just been confirmed and, as soon as it has been published and the land has been acquired, work can start.
