HC Deb 04 June 1959 vol 606 cc43-4W
84. Mr. Fisher

asked the Minister of Education whether he will advise the education authorities to include in the school syllabus some instruction about race relations, with a view to eradicating colour-prejudice from the minds of the children.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Much as I sympathise with the purpose of the hon. Member's Question, I do not think such advice would be appropriate. In my view, children are most likely to derive a proper attitude to race relations from the general character of their school and from the way teachers handle the subject as it arises in the course of the ordinary curriculum. Teachers are already being most helpful in this matter and they will find particularly valuable opportunities in the study of the Commonwealth, on which I have recently issued a circular.
