HC Deb 04 June 1959 vol 606 c52W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is satisfied that the statutory requirements regarding planning permission for the destruction of George Square, Edinburgh, are being fulfilled; and whether, in view of the fact that it is usual to hold inquiries into matters of this sort, he will reconsider his decision in this respect.

Mr. Maclay

I am satisfied that the statutory requirements in this matter are being observed. It is not usual to hold an inquiry in respect of development not at variance with the approved development plan where there is no conflict between the developer and the responsible local planning authority. As the hon. Member knows, I have had occasion to consider the situation in this case and I should not be justified in seeking to bring the university's proposals under further review.
