HC Deb 02 June 1959 vol 606 c1W
11. Mr. Russell

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, if he is aware that devices have been invented in the United States of America for removing the harmful ingredients of motor-vehicle exhausts before they are given out into the atmosphere; and what are the prospects of such devices, or similar ones, being brought into use on an economic basis in this country in order to reduce atmospheric pollution.

Mr. H. Nicholls

Yes, the Warren Spring Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, has carried out road tests on one such catalytic device which reduced the pollution from petrol engine fumes effectively. The Warren Spring Laboratory proposes to carry out further researches on devices suitable for diesel-engine vehicles. At this stage of the research work it is not possible to assess the future prospects of this method of reducing atmospheric pollution.
