HC Deb 23 July 1959 vol 609 c147W
104. Sir L. Ropner

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has yet received a report from the Boundary Commission for England, recommending changes in the boundaries of certain constituencies; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Yes. I have received a Report from the Boundary Commission for England, dated 20th July, under Section 2 (3) of the House of Commons (Redistribution of Seats) Act, 1949, recommending adjustments to the boundaries of thirty-nine constituencies to conform with local government boundary alterations. In accordance with Section 2 (5) of the Act, I am arranging for the Report, together with draft Orders-in-Council to give effect to the Commission's recommendations, to be laid before Parliament within the next few days. But the House will understand that it will not be practicable, in the time available, to invite Parliament to approve the draft Orders before the Recess.

The Leader of the Opposition and the Leader of the Liberal Party have been consulted and agree.
