HC Deb 21 January 1959 vol 598 cc36-7W
82. Mr. Gresham Cooke

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the results of the visit of the President of the World Bank to Colonel Nasser to negotiate in regard to British interests in Egypt.

Mr. Erroll

At the request of the United Kingdom Government and the Government of the United Arab Republic the President of the International Bank agreed to use his good offices towards a settlement of the financial matters in dispute between the two Governments. As a result an agreement was initialled in Cairo on 16th January and it is hoped that it will be formally signed quite soon. My right hon. Friend then intends to make a statement to the House and to publish the text of the agreement in the form of a White Paper.
