HC Deb 21 January 1959 vol 598 cc33-4W
72. Mr. Blenkinsop

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will review the liability to National Service of non-graduate members of nuclear engineering research teams and of others doing work of national importance, in view of the information given to him by the hon. Member for Newcastle-upon-Tyne, East.

Mr. Iain Macleod

No. I have no power to exempt any man from his liability under the National Service Acts. Science and engineering graduates employed on certain categories of work of national importance are granted indefinite deferment of call-up, but I am not prepared to extend these arrangements to men with other qualifications.
