HC Deb 21 January 1959 vol 598 c31W
68. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Labour what is the latest figure of unemployment in the United Kingdom and in Newcastle-under-Lyme, respectively; and what proportions of the national and local working populations, respectively, these figures represent.

Mr. Iain Macleod

At 12th January there were 1,490 unemployed persons on the registers of the Newcastle-under-Lyme Employment Exchange and Youth Employment Office, representing 5.7 per cent. of the total number of employees in the area. Figures for Great Britain for 12th January are not yet available. At 8th December, 1958, the total number registered as unemployed in Great Britain was 531,727 or 2.4 per cent. of the total number of employees.
