HC Deb 21 January 1959 vol 598 cc21-2W
Sir A. Bossom

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will consider making it possible for telephones which, for some reason, go out of order during weekends and which the operators state cannot now be put right during that time except on emergency calls, to be repaired immediately since, if the telephone is out of order, no one can be informed of an emergency need.

Mr. Thompson

Our present arrangements, which I believe give general satisfaction, should enable most faults reported on Saturday mornings to be put right the same day. Faults on certain lines serving, for example, hospitals, doctors and public services, are attended to at any time during the weekend, and this applies also to other lines when the circumstances are exceptional.

If what my hon. Friend has been told by our operators is not in accord with this, and if he will let me have details, I shall be glad to make inquiry.
