HC Deb 26 February 1959 vol 600 c191W
67. Mr. Mason

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty to what extent research is being conducted into the detection of underwater vessels or submarine missiles approaching the coastline of the United Kingdom; and what defence is contemplated against this type of threat.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

Great importance has always been, and is attached to ways of detecting underwater vessels. Equipment and weapon systems for this purpose are under continuous development and satisfactory advances have been made in this field. There has been a comprehensive exchange of information on research and development with our N.A.T.O. Allies.
