HC Deb 25 February 1959 vol 600 c166W
99. Mr. Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for War how many Regular officers and men are engaged in the training of the Territorial Army; and what proportion these numbers bear to the strength of the Territorial Army.

Mr. Soames

There were 252,762 officers and men in the Territorial Army at the beginning of this year. About 96,000 were volunteers actively under training. The Regular Army permanent staff numbers about 960 officers and 3,800 men.

During the summer camping season other Regular soldiers help for varying periods. About 1,700 will be needed this year, a number which is being reduced progressively by the employment of civilians.
