HC Deb 24 February 1959 vol 600 c128W
56. Mr. Albu

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress is being made with the geological survey of the Somaliland Protectorate.

Mr. J. Amery

Most of the basement rocks covering one quarter of the Protectorate have been geologically mapped by the Geological Survey. The sedimentary rocks covering the rest of the Protectorate are being intensively surveyed by oil companies. Large deposits of high-grade gypsum/anhydrite near Barbera are being evaluated. Small deposits of tin, beryl and columbite have been discovered.
