HC Deb 19 February 1959 vol 600 c94W
Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Minister of Health what were the causes of the rise in deaths from leukaemia in Lancashire by 22 per cent. between 1950–53 and 1954–57 and by 40 per cent. in Cumberland, compared with 13 per cent. for the whole of England and Wales.

Mr. Walker-Smith

The increases which the hon. Member has in mind illustrate a recent narrowing of the gap between the death rate from leukaemia in the north of England and the higher rate in the south. This trend may well be due in part to greater accuracy in diagnosis.
