HC Deb 19 February 1959 vol 600 cc88-9W
Mr. P. Williams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a further statement about the constitutional proposals for the Aden Colony and Protectorate.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

As regards Aden Colony, the proposals referred to in my reply to the right hon. Member for Wakefield (Mr. Creech Jones) on 26th November, 1957, were implemented in the Aden Colony (Amendment) Order, 1958, which was laid before Parliament on 22nd October, 1958, and in Additional Royal Instructions Signed by Her Majesty on the 4th November, 1958. These instruments were brought into force on 18th November, 1958, and 1st January, 1959, respectively.

In Aden Protectorate six States, with the agreement of Her Majesty's Government, formed a federation called the Federation of Arab Amirates of the South on 11th February, 1959. The constitution of the federation which was drawn up and approved by the six States concerned is in Arabic and the text has not been published in this country but I am arranging for a copy of an English translation to be placed in the Library of the House. The English text of the Treaty between the United Kingdom and the Federation was presented to Parliament as Command Paper No. 665 on 12th February, 1959.
