HC Deb 18 February 1959 vol 600 c57W
88. Mr. Willey

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether, to avoid its being closed, he will arrange for Admiralty work to be carried out at Wear Dockyard, Sunderland.

Mr. T. G. D. Galbraith

No. This firm does not possess the specialist knowledge required for new construction for the Royal Navy. Our policy as regards naval repairs and refits is to allocate all such work to the Royal Dockyards, and only in exceptional cases is work put out to contract. I can hold out little hope of exceptions being made in the foreseeable future.
