HC Deb 18 February 1959 vol 600 c51W
70. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will introduce legislation to make the provision of redundancy payments obligatory on all employers in industrial undertakings.

Mr. Iain Macleod

No. I am aware that some employers make payments of this kind, but I do not think it would be either practicable or right to make this practice obligatory on employers generally. In my view, this and other questions which arise in relation to redundancy, such as the length of notice and the order of discharge, are matters for consideration and action on a voluntary basis.
