HC Deb 18 February 1959 vol 600 c55W
61. Mr. Parkin

asked the Minister of Labour if he is aware of the inconvenience caused by uncertainty about the date of the ending of compulsory National Service; and if he will now make a statement, with particular reference to those born during the last quarter of 1939.

Mr. Iain Macleod

As explained in the 1957 Defence Statement and repeated on a number of occasions since, the Government are planning on the basis that there will be no further call-up under the National Service Acts after the end of 1960. So far as men born in the last quarter of 1939 are concerned, a statement will be made next week.

62. Mr. Boyd

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will arrange for more advance information to be given to men whose liability to National Service has been deferred as to the dates when they they can expect to be called up.

Mr. Iain Macleod

It is difficult to give reliable advance information about the time of a man's call-up. I am, however, considering whether any additional information can be given.
