HC Deb 17 February 1959 vol 600 c26W
73. Mr. Watkins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that large numbers of watches of an estimated value of £800,000 a year are being smuggled into this country; and whether he will adopt more vigorous measures to eliminate this illicit traffic which is so harmful to the interests of the watch-making industry.

Mr. Amory

Every effort is made to combat watch smuggling, and countermeasures by the Customs have effectively reduced its scale.
