HC Deb 17 February 1959 vol 600 cc43-4W
Mr. W. Wells

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what further action has been taken to give effect to the recommendations of the Select Committee on Estimates in their Report of the Session 1957–58 on Police (England and Wales), since he made the replies to them contained in the Sixth Special Report of that Committee of 1957–58 and their Second Special Report of 1958–59.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Since I sent to the Select Committee the reply which was published in their Second Special Report (Session 1958–59), their recommendation about police rent allowance has been considered by the Police Council for Great Britain, who have decided not to initiate any change in the existing arrangements. Although I felt unable to accept the recommendation that there should be a Chief Inspector of Constabulary an additional Inspector has been appointed. Effect has been given to the recommendation concerning the consideration of the estimates by the Board of Governors of the Police College, but I do not propose to ask the Board to make an annual report.

A small number of the Committee's recommendations call for continuing study and consideration; this is being given. On the others no further action is required.
