HC Deb 17 February 1959 vol 600 cc38-9W
113. Lieut.-Colonel Bromley-Davenport

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Mnistry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, whether a sufficient period of the International Geophysical Year has now elapsed to enable him to obtain a better estimate of the value of the Jodrell Bank radio telescope; and what action he proposes to take to ensure that it will continue to enjoy its present world wide prestige and authority.

Mr. H. Nicholls

All reports so far received by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research demonstrate the great value to research of this fine instrument, and I am certain that its inherent merit will continue to ensure its world wide prestige and authority. As I informed my hon. Friend, in a Written Reply on 18th December last year, the Department has funds at its disposal for the financing of research of special timeliness and promise and any applications from Manchester University for grants for future research work involving the use of the radio telescope will be considered on their merits. One such grant of £15,200 has in fact recently been awarded and further applications from Manchester University are under consideration by the Council. As regards capital grants I have nothing to add to my statement in the Adjournment Debate on 18th December, 1958.
