HC Deb 12 February 1959 vol 599 cc223-4W
Mr. C. Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many trained teachers are at present employed in St. Helena; and what steps he is taking to increase the number.

Mr. J. Amery

Of the 68 teachers (including assistants and pupil teachers) responsible for the education of St. Helena's 526 school children, only three have attended teachers' training colleges in the United Kingdom. Two teachers are at present on scholarships being trained in this country and a further teacher has been selected for training this year. Consideration is being given to intensive in-service training by the Assistant Education Officer.
