HC Deb 12 February 1959 vol 599 c229W
9. Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what action he is taking to assist Mauritians who wish to emigrate to other Commonwealth countries.

Mr. J. Amery

During the last few years the Mauritius Government and officials of my Department have spent a very considerable amount of time and energy in trying to find outlets for organised emigration from Mauritius, but without success.

Although such attempts will be continued, I am bound to say that I do not think emigration can provide an answer to the economic problems of the people of Mauritius. In my view, all concerned would be wiser to concentrate their energies in the future primarily on seeking other solutions.
