HC Deb 12 February 1959 vol 599 c241W
Mr. John Hall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total sum recovered by charitable organisations in each financial year since 1951–52 under deeds of covenant made with them by individuals and by firms.

Mr. Simon

The repayments of Income Tax to charities under deeds of covenant were as follows:

£
million
1951–52 4
1952–53
1953–54
1954–55 4
1955–56
1956–57
1957–58

Separate figures for individuals and for firms are not available.

Mr. John Hall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations have been made to him by charitable institutions with a view to amending the law whereby they may only recover the tax paid on gifts made under a seven-year covenant.

Mr. Simon

I have had no representations from charitable institutions for altering the conditions under which charities may reclaim tax in respect of gifts under covenant.
