§ Mr. ProfumoIn 1953, at the request of the Security Council, Israel suspended work on the diversion of the waters of the River Jordan in the demilitarised zone on the Syrian frontier. A resolution sponsored by the United Kingdom delegation, authorising the Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation to find a compromise solution, was vetoed by the Soviet delegate. No progress towards a solution in the United Nations has since been made.
