HC Deb 11 February 1959 vol 599 c197W
55. Mr. E. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what discussions have recently taken place in the United Nations regarding the use of the waters of the River Jordan by the State of Israel; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Profumo

In 1953, at the request of the Security Council, Israel suspended work on the diversion of the waters of the River Jordan in the demilitarised zone on the Syrian frontier. A resolution sponsored by the United Kingdom delegation, authorising the Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation to find a compromise solution, was vetoed by the Soviet delegate. No progress towards a solution in the United Nations has since been made.
