HC Deb 11 February 1959 vol 599 cc215-6W
120. Mr. Slater

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, in view of the increased number of mobile shops being used throughout the country, if he will set in motion through his Department consultations with the builders of these mobile shops with the object of devising some safety device against possible accidents to young children.

Mr. Nugent

As a result of representations made by the Durham County Council, the County Councils' Association recently approached our Department about accidents to small children crawling underneath, or otherwise being struck by, mobile shops.

Some years ago we were in touch with representatives of the makers and operators of delivery vehicles and we encouraged, among other measures, the fitting of extra mirrors to improve the driver's view around his vehicle. In my view this is still the best answer to this type of accident.
