HC Deb 11 February 1959 vol 599 c207W
97. Mr. Mellish

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty to what extent, in view of the delay in the conclusion of an agreement to purchase a nuclear power plant from the United States, the considerable increase in the estimated cost, and the need to prepare a complete new design for the submarine itself, Her Majesty's Government proposes to reconsider the policy of installing a United States power plant in H.M.S. "Dreadnought".

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

There is no intention to vary the policy announced by my predecessor in reply to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Horncastle (Commander Maitland) on 11th June, 1958. I do not accept the suggestion that there has been delay in negotiating the complex agreement involved; or that a considerable increase in cost will result: or that its fulfilment will entail a completely new design for "Dreadnought."
