50. Mr. Swingler

asked the Prime Minister to what extent the declaration of the Minister of Defence at the Council meeting of the Bagdad Pact countries in Karachi, to the effect that the military obligations of the Bagdad Pact were still necessary, represents the policy of Her Majesty's Government; and for what purpose this alliance is now being maintained.

51. Mr. Zilliacus

asked the Prime Minister to what extent the declaration of the Minister of Defence at the Bagdad Pact Ministerial Conference in Karachi, to the effect that the military obligations of the alliance must be maintained, in spite of the withdrawal of Iraq, including the obligation to defend the territories of Bagdad Pact signatories against alleged Communist subversion, represented the policy of Her Majesty's Government.

The Prime Minister

I have nothing to add to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Ashfield (Mr. Warbey) and the hon. Member for Leek (Mr. Harold Davies) on 5th February.
