HC Deb 05 February 1959 vol 599 cc119-20W
113. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Education the present shortage of teachers in the County of Essex; the prospects for the next five years; and to what extent teachers have agreed to being transferred to seriously short-staffed schools.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Last month the authority was 353 teachers short of its quota of 10,650. There should be considerable improvement in the next five years, since the general increase in teachers will much more than match the increase in the school roll. I cannot answer the last part of the Question, but I understand that the local education authority has had considerable success in securing a greater evenness in the supply of teachers in the different parts of its area.
