HC Deb 05 February 1959 vol 599 c102W
61. Mr. Zilliacus

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in view of the importance of automation to industry, what Treasury grants are available, administratively, to promote research into the development of electronic techniques and equipment.

Mr. Simon

The Government recognise the importance of this subject. It covers many different scientific activities, towards the cost of which the Exchequer contributes in various ways through the National Research Development Corporation, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Ministry of Supply, the Atomic Energy Authority, and the Admiralty. The work supported by Government funds is being done partly in the Government's own research establishments and partly elsewhere, for instance in industry, the universities, and the industrial research associations.
