HC Deb 04 February 1959 vol 599 cc61-2W
47. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he is aware of the serious financial position of most United Kingdom municipal aerodromes, which, if deprived of Government assistance, will be compelled to close down as a result of the recession of air travel; what was his reply to the representations of the Aerodrome Owners' Association last October; and if he will recommend a subsidy on similar lines to that which applies when passengers fly from State aerodromes.

Mr. Hay

I can well believe that aerodrome owners are disappointed at the effect upon their financial position of the trend of air traffic last year. This may, however, only be a temporary setback. We are still considering the Association's representations. They have asked for a subsidy for all aerodromes not owned by the State; this would, however, be inconsistent with current policy which is to reduce the Exchequer's liability for aerodromes, and not to extend it.
