§ 141. Mr. G. Thomasasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the labour in the United Kingdom enamel industry, which at one time stood at more than 10,000 workers, has been reduced to under 5,000; and whether he will make a statement on prospects of employment for workers engaged in this industry.
§ Mr. Iain MacleodStatistics obtained by my Department do not differentiate between the enamel industry and the hollow-ware industry as a whole. Employment in the hollow-ware industry in Great 77W Britain increased by 1,500 between August and November, 1958. 1,269 were unemployed on 8th December, the latest date for which I have information, which represents 2.2 per cent. Prospects of employment in the industry will depend on the demand for goods of this kind and on the ability of the industry to remain competitive.
