HC Deb 03 February 1959 vol 599 c46W
98. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken by the Seychelles Government to develop the tourist attraction of that colony.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Seychelles Government regards it as only a question of time before private investors become aware of the striking possibilities of the tourist industry in the Seychelles, and sees its own task as being to ensure that basic facilities exist to support the industry.

Steps that have been taken recently include the following:

  1. (a) the improvement of shipping services between Seychelles and East Africa;
  2. (b) the construction of a round-the-island road on Mahe and a decision to install a new electricity supply;
  3. (c) the creation of a post of a full-time Tourist Officer;
  4. (d) the establishment of a fund from which loans may be made to finance local projects connected with the tourist industry.

I am in close touch with the Governor about other measures to promote tourism.
