HC Deb 03 February 1959 vol 599 c47W
99. Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the anticipated numbers of new entrants into the Probation Service who were required to be recruited in each of the years 1954 to 1958; and what were the actual numbers accepted for training prior to appointment in each of those years.

Mr. R. A. Butler

It has always been anticipated that the Probation Service would readily absorb all persons trained for probation work under the Home Office scheme, and the Probation Advisory and Training Board has continuously endeavoured to recruit for training as many suitable men and women as possible. With the increase of the probation case load that began late in 1955, after declining in each of the two previous years, the recruitment drive was intensified, with some measure of success, as is shown by the numbers asked for in the last part of the Question, namely: 1954, 61; 1955, 41; 1956, 76; 1957, 102; and 1958, 131.
