HC Deb 02 February 1959 vol 599 c4W
53. Mr. Gower

asked the Paymaster-General if he will give a general direction to the National Coal Board to restrain it from closing coal mines in anthracite areas, in view of the shortage of anthracite to meet our domestic and other commitments, and the need for maintaining our usual markets.

Mr. Maudling

No. There are limits on the extent to which uneconomic short-life collieries can be maintained in production.
