§ 119. Mr. Wyattasked the Minister of Works why one of the lodges at Stanhope Gate, Hyde Park, has been destroyed; what consultation took place beforehand with the Fine Art Commission; and what is the intention for the other lodge.
§ Lord John HopeIn connection with the Park Lane Improvement Scheme it is necessary for both lodges at Stanhope Gate to be removed. They were extensively altered in Victorian times and are not now considered of sufficient merit to justify the very considerable cost of re-erection, nor would it be possible to continue to use them as lodges. The Royal Fine Art Commission was consulted, and at first suggested the re-erection of the lodges within the new park boundary, but in view of the considerations I have mentioned the Commission did not press the point.
